Panama Canal restricts vessel transits and draft limits due to drought
The Panama Canal Authority is implementing new water management measures to address reduced rainfall and the anticipated El Niño phenomenon. Due to a 34% deficit in accumulated rainfall from May to August 2026, the authority will restrict vessel transits and draft limits to ensure long-term operational sustainability.
Starting September 4, 2026, daily transits will be capped at 34 vessels, consisting of nine Neopanamax slots and 25 Panamax slots. This capacity will be further reduced to 32 daily transits on September 15, with Panamax slots dropping to 23. To manage demand, the authority is also adjusting daily auction slots, categorizing them into four groups based on cargo types, including LNG/LPG, dry bulk, container ships, and tankers.
Draft restrictions for Neopanamax locks are also being adjusted. The maximum draft is set to decrease to 48 feet on August 26 and further to 47.5 feet on September 3. In response to these constraints, some carriers have announced transit surcharges ranging from $200 to $1,000 per forty-foot equivalent unit (FEU).
