Panama Canal: SK Gas pays record $5.3M for priority transit
South Korean company SK Gas paid a record $5.3 million during an auction to secure priority passage for its LPG tanker, the G. Spirit, through the Panama Canal on September 1. This payment is the highest ever recorded for a single transit.
The Panama Canal Authority is implementing transit restrictions due to severe drought conditions caused by the El Niño phenomenon. Low water levels in the Gatun and Alajuela lakes, which supply the canal, have necessitated a reduction in daily vessel transits. Starting September 3, daily transits will decrease from 36 to 34 vessels. This reduction will continue on September 15, when daily transits are scheduled to drop to 32.
The canal handles approximately 5% of global maritime trade. While most transits are pre-booked, last-minute slots are auctioned, with prices rising significantly as competition for limited capacity increases.
