Panama Canal Tightens Draft Limits Amid Low Water Levels

The Panama Canal Authority announced it will lower the maximum draft for ships using the Neopanamax locks to 14.63 m (48 ft) starting 26 August and to 14.48 m (47.5 ft) from 3 September, pending further notice. The restriction means heavily loaded vessels will have to reduce cargo weight to pass safely.

The measure responds to the current low level of Gatun Lake, which supplies the water needed for lock operations, and to weather projections indicating continued dry conditions. The authority cited the lingering effects of the El Niño climate pattern and watershed conditions that require extra water‑saving steps, even as the rainy season has begun. While the draft limits are tightened, the Canal says it is not reducing the number of ships allowed to transit either the Neopanamax or Panamax locks, though additional operational changes could be announced if conditions worsen.
