Panama Canal to reduce maximum draft for Neopanamax vessels

The Panama Canal has announced a progressive reduction in the maximum authorized draft for Neopanamax vessels. This decision is driven by current water levels and projections for Gatun Lake in the coming weeks.

According to a notice sent to shipping companies, the maximum draft will be reduced to 48 feet (14.63 meters) starting August 26, 2026, and further decreased to 47.5 feet (14.48 meters) on September 3. The authority stated that these adjustments will not affect the number of daily transits and are part of a water management and operational strategy to ensure sustainability.

These changes are part of the fourth and fifth draft adjustments announced by the Canal as part of water resource conservation measures adopted since December 2025 to prepare for the 2026 dry season. Officials are continuously monitoring weather conditions and technical projections, including the potential effects of El Niño, to determine if further management measures are required.
