Panama Canal to reduce vessel transits due to El Niño drought
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced a reduction in vessel transits to combat severe drought conditions caused by the El Niño phenomenon. The measure aims to protect water resources and ensure the long-term sustainability of canal operations.
The reduction will be implemented gradually. Starting September 3, the daily transit limit will be adjusted to 34 vessels. By September 15, the limit will further decrease to 32 vessels per day.
To manage the scarcity, the ACP is modifying its daily slot auction system to promote more equitable access. Vessels will be categorized into four groups based on cargo type, including gas, containers, vehicles, and fuels. Additionally, new limits will prevent single shipping companies from monopolizing reserved slots unless no other bidders are present.
