Panama Canal to reduce ship transits due to El Niño drought
The Panama Canal Authority has announced a reduction in daily ship transits due to severe drought conditions linked to the El Niño weather pattern. The decision follows a significant drop in rainfall, with levels between May and August recorded at 34% below the historical average.
Starting September 3, the number of permitted daily transits will decrease from 36 to 34. This restriction will be further tightened on September 15, reducing the daily capacity to 32 ships. The shortage of water in the two artificial lakes that supply the canal has necessitated these measures to ensure long-term sustainability.
In addition to transit limits, the authority is implementing restrictions on the maximum draft depth for larger vessels. The Panama Canal is a critical global artery, managing approximately 5% of maritime trade and roughly 40% of container traffic for the United States.
The drought is affecting the broader Central American region; the government of Honduras recently declared a drought emergency for 80% of its territory.
