Panama Canal transit fees reach record 5 million USD

Large cargo vessels are paying unprecedented sums of up to 5 million USD to secure immediate passage through the Panama Canal. Ilya Espino de Marotta, the newly appointed administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, described these levels as record-breaking.

The surge in costs is driven by geopolitical instability and extreme weather conditions, which have disrupted global shipping routes and energy flows. The 80-kilometer canal is a critical artery for global commerce, facilitating nearly 6% of the world's trade.

While approximately 90% of transit slots are booked months in advance through a standard reservation system, a small number of slots are reserved for auctions to accommodate vessels requiring urgent passage. While the starting bid for these auctions is 100,000 USD, the current average has been approximately 380,000 USD. These escalating costs may eventually impact the broader supply chain, potentially increasing freight rates, commodity prices, and consumer costs.
