Panama Canal updates transit reservation and security systems

The Panama Canal Authority has implemented updates to its transit reservation systems and authentication mechanisms. Following a recent update to authentication protocols, some shipping companies reported intermittent difficulties in finalizing vessel transit slot reservations for two days. The Authority stated that these issues did not compromise the continuity of waterway operations and that all systems are currently functioning normally.

In addition to digital security enhancements, the Canal has updated criteria for reassigning canceled or available slots during Neopanamax lock reservation periods. Priority for these slots will be given to container ships, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessels, and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ships.

The Authority also updated requirements for the NetZero program, an initiative supporting low-carbon and energy-efficient vessels. To streamline participation, preliminary tonnage inspections for the program may now be conducted outside of Panama, allowing for more efficient processing of documentation and technical data before vessels arrive in Panamanian waters.
