Panama celebrates National Calypso Day with cultural events

Panama will host a series of cultural activities from October 16 to 18 to commemorate National Calypso Day. Established in February 2024, the date honors the birth of musician Wilfred Berry and aims to preserve Afropanamanian cultural history.

The agenda includes a discussion at the University of Panama featuring representatives from both Panamanian and Costa Rican calypso traditions, followed by a musical concert. Additional events include a handicap race at the Hipódromo Presidente Remón and a musical competition involving international calypso groups. Organizers emphasize that these celebrations are vital for maintaining the visibility of this musical genre and passing its heritage to younger generations.
