Panama City celebrates 507 years of foundation

Panama City is celebrating its 507th anniversary of foundation. The festivities include a solemn session by the Municipal Council at the ruins of the Convento de Las Monjas de la Concepción in Panama Viejo, coinciding with the 112th anniversary of the inauguration of the Panama Canal.

Due to maintenance work at the Miraflores plant, the Panama Canal Authority has announced a temporary suspension of the potable water supply from 10:00 PM on Saturday, August 15, until 6:00 AM on Sunday, August 16. This outage will affect several sectors, including Casco Antiguo, Arraiján, Panama Pacifico, Gamboa, Paraíso, Clayton, Albrook, and Cárdenas.

Panama Viejo, the site of the original city founded in 1519 by Pedro Arias Davila, remains a significant historical landmark. After being attacked by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671, the city was relocated to its current site in Casco Antiguo. The ruins of the original settlement are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
