Panama completes first railway tunnel under the Panama Canal

Construction of the Panama Metro Line 3 has reached a major milestone with the completion of the first railway tunnel passing beneath the Panama Canal. The tunnel, measuring 4.5 kilometers in length, was excavated by a tunnel boring machine that traveled at a depth of approximately 65 meters below sea level.

During the excavation process, the machine removed roughly 700,000 cubic meters of rock and earth. The structure is reinforced with 2,295 concrete rings, each consisting of nine segments. The project aims to connect Panama City with Panama West, specifically linking Albrook to Ciudad del Futuro in Arraiján, to alleviate heavy traffic congestion in the region.

Line 3 currently shows an overall progress rate of 82%. Following the completion of the tunnel excavation, upcoming phases will include the removal of the boring machine, the installation of running rails and electromechanical systems, and safety testing. The metro line is scheduled to begin passenger service in 2028.
