Panama deputy proposes plebiscite on Parlacen membership
Panamanian Deputy Neftalí Zamora has resubmitted a bill to hold a national plebiscite regarding Panama’s membership in the Central American Parliament (Parlacen). Zamora argues that the organization imposes significant financial burdens on the country, citing annual costs of approximately $2.3 million, while providing little legislative benefit to the region.
The proposal suggests that citizens should vote on whether Panama should remain part of the body. If the bill passes through the legislature and receives executive approval, the Electoral Tribunal would be responsible for organizing the consultation. Zamora noted that the current membership involves high costs and provides privileges and immunity to members without tangible results for the nation.
