Panama evaluates mine closure as Colombia unemployment rises

Panama is facing a major economic and political decision regarding the Cobre Panama mine. An interministerial commission has recommended an ordered, self-funded closure of the facility, operated by First Quantum Minerals. The mine has been paralyzed since 2023 following a Supreme Court ruling that declared its contract unconstitutional. The commission suggests that any potential new agreement must respect the court's ruling, ensure state ownership of minerals, and include a defined closure date with costs covered by the operator. First Quantum Minerals has stated it is willing to participate in good faith to establish a new legal framework.

In other economic news, Panama reported 77,300 new jobs and a decrease in unemployment to 8.5%, noting that the private sector has led job creation for the first time in 12 years. Meanwhile, Colombia reported a rise in its national unemployment rate to 9.4% in August 2026, up from 8.6% the previous year. The increase was largely driven by losses in the manufacturing, arts, and agricultural sectors.
