Panama faces maritime trade threats from drought and regional competition

Panama is facing significant logistical and environmental challenges that threaten its historical dominance in global maritime trade. The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has reduced daily transits for deep-draft vessels to an average of 29.5, down from previous levels, forecasting a decrease of 743 vessel crossings in the upcoming fiscal year.

This reduction is driven by severe water scarcity caused by a ‘Super Niño’ weather phenomenon. The intense warming of equatorial Pacific waters has displaced rainfall away from Central America, impacting the freshwater levels required to operate the canal's locks.

Simultaneously, Panama's competitive edge is being eroded by port congestion and a lack of digital infrastructure. Regional competitors, specifically in Mexico and Colombia, are aggressively expanding and capturing cargo volumes at unprecedented rates. As shipping lines seek faster delivery times and better digital integration, Panama's container movement growth has fallen below 60 percent, highlighting a growing divergence between the Isthmus and its regional rivals.
