MV Ocean Winner sinks off India's east coast with 22 crew missing

The Panama-flagged bulk carrier MV Ocean Winner sank in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, approximately 240 nautical miles off the Odisha coast. The vessel was transporting iron ore from Paradip Port, India, to Singapore.

The ship was carrying a 24-person crew, consisting of 20 Chinese nationals, three from Myanmar, and one from Bangladesh. While two crew members have been rescued from life rafts by the merchant tanker MT AISOPOS, 22 crew members remain missing.

The Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy have launched a coordinated joint search and rescue operation. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Sri Vijaya Puram activated the International Safety Net following a loss of communication with the vessel. Multiple Coast Guard vessels, including ICGS Varad, ICGS Anmol, and ICGS Vijit, have been deployed to the area. The exact cause of the sinking is currently unknown and remains under investigation.
