Panama Health Ministry probes six deaths in Ngäbe Buglé indigenous communities
The Ministry of Health of Panama is conducting an epidemiological investigation after six children and adults died in the Ngäbe Buglé comarca. Preliminary findings link the fatalities to severe lower respiratory infections.
A rapid‑response team has been stationed in the affected villages of Valle Bonito, Palmira and Guayacán since July 25 to gather field data, provide medical care and reinforce surveillance. Three of the deceased did not seek formal medical attention and relied on traditional remedies, while close contacts of the cases remain asymptomatic.
Health workers have treated 178 persons, administered 391 vaccine doses—including 184 against influenza—and distributed 394 medication courses. The ministry maintains ongoing epidemiological surveillance and coordination of response actions. Earlier, on July 20, Panama and Costa Rica agreed to issue a health card for Ngäbe Buglé migrants to share medical records and avoid duplicate vaccinations. The Ngäbe Buglé region, home to roughly 200,000 people, is Panama’s most populous indigenous territory.
