Panama implements new crocodile management protocols

Panama's Ministry of Environment (MiAMBIENTE) has implemented a pioneering regulatory framework to manage risks associated with crocodiles near human communities. The protocol, published in the Official Gazette, aims to protect local populations while ensuring the preservation of the American crocodile and caimans in their natural habitats.

Following a public consultation process, the new scientific procedures include prevention, monitoring, environmental education, and non-lethal measures such as capture, relocation, and exclusion. The regulations also prohibit feeding or provoking the reptiles and mandate the identification of high-incident areas.

This measure responds to an increase in sightings in urban, tourist, and coastal areas caused by human expansion into natural habitats. MiAMBIENTE noted that increased sightings do not necessarily indicate an overpopulation of the species.
