Panama launches national strategy to combat dementia

Panama has introduced a National Strategy for the Management of Dementia, a roadmap spanning 2025 to 2030. Approved by the Ministry of Health (MINSA) via Resolution No. 463, the initiative aims to strengthen the country's healthcare response to conditions affecting memory and cognitive function.

The strategy prioritizes early identification, comprehensive care, and support for both patients and their caregivers. Health Minister Fernando Boyd Galindo emphasized the importance of ensuring dignified and timely care while protecting the rights and quality of life of those affected. The plan was developed with technical assistance from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, dementia affects over 55 million people, a figure projected to reach 139 million by 2050. Health advocates highlight that 45% of cases could be delayed or prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors. However, significant challenges remain, including social stigma and a lack of medical training, as many professionals still incorrectly view dementia as a normal part of aging.
