Panama lawmakers form Taiwan parliamentary group amid Chinese pressure

Forty-six members of the Panamanian National Assembly have established the Multi-Party Parliamentary Exchange Group Panama-Taiwan. The group aims to foster cooperation in trade, technology, innovation, and agrotechnology without altering the country's official diplomatic relations.

Diplomatic sources indicate that the Chinese Embassy attempted to block the initiative through letters, phone calls, and urgent meetings, reportedly even threatening certain legislators. In response, the Chinese Embassy expressed “strong discontent and multi-linear rejection,” demanding that deputies cease institutional contact with Taiwan.

While President José Raúl Mulino stated that the move does not have executive branch support, proponents argue the Assembly maintains the right to engage with other parliaments. This development highlights ongoing geopolitical tensions between China and the United States regarding influence over Panama's strategic infrastructure, including the interoceanic canal and major ports.
