Panama Metro and MiBus launch new payment system amid technical issues
The new payment collection system for Panama’s Metro and MiBus launched on August 31, 2026, but faced immediate technical difficulties. Users reported issues with validators failing to recognize payment cards, inconsistencies in displayed balances, and delays in recharge updates.
SONDA, the company responsible for implementing the technological platform, stated that the system is currently in a phase of progressive adjustment and stabilization. To assist passengers, Metro de Panamá has deployed staff at stations to manage manual cases and reduce wait times during peak hours.
Carlos Sánchez Fábrega, manager of MiBus, apologized for the inconveniences and predicted that the system would stabilize within hours. He described the modernization as part of an integral plan to expand payment options, which will eventually include debit and credit cards, digital wallets, and QR codes.
