Panama Ministry of Health controls 34 malaria cases in Panama City

Panama’s Ministry of Health (Minsa) has confirmed 34 cases of malaria among informal workers near the Merca Panamá food distribution market in Panama City. Health officials stated that the situation is under control and emphasized that the disease cannot be transmitted through food or directly from person to person.

Investigations suggest the cases are linked to individuals arriving from endemic provinces, specifically those who have entered forested areas or stayed overnight in the surroundings of the market. Minsa has implemented reactive surveillance, including laboratory testing for symptomatic individuals, timely treatment, and vector control measures such as fumigation within and around the market facilities and wetland treatments.

While US health guidance typically lists no malaria transmission in Panama City, local authorities are maintaining strict monitoring to prevent further spread.
