Panama Ministry of Health evaluates hiring foreign medical specialists

Panama's Ministry of Health (Minsa) is evaluating the recruitment of foreign medical specialists to address critical shortages within the national public health system. Health Minister Fernando Boyd Galindo stated that international hiring would only be considered for essential vacancies where qualified Panamanian professionals are unavailable.

The most significant gaps identified are in cardiology, anesthesiology, and oncology. This assessment follows technical inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding nuclear technology infrastructure for cancer treatment.

Additionally, the Ministry expressed support for Law 547, recently sanctioned by President José Raúl Mulino. This law establishes the ‘Right to Oncological Oblivion’ in Panama, aimed at removing financial and social stigmas for cancer survivors.
