Panama Ministry of Health launches new cervical cancer prevention protocols

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) in Panama has launched new technical-administrative regulations and management guides for the Prevention and Detection of Pre-invasive Cervical Cancer Lesions. This initiative aims to strengthen protocols for screening, early detection, treatment, and patient follow-up across the national health network.

The updated program integrates advanced Human Papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping tests and cytologies tailored to individual needs. Health Minister Dr. Fernando Boyd Galindo emphasized the urgency of these measures, noting that the National Oncology Institute (ION) recorded 376 cases of cervical cancer and 71 deaths in 2024.

Panama is working toward the ‘90-70-90’ strategy as part of the Integrated Strategy for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer 2025-2029. The goals include achieving 90% HPV vaccination coverage, ensuring 70% of women are screened opportunely, and guaranteeing that 90% of women identified with lesions receive continuous treatment and medical follow-up. The plan intends to expand coverage beyond urban centers to remote areas and indigenous comarcas.
