Panama Ministry of Health reports two new influenza deaths

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) has confirmed two new deaths due to influenza, bringing the annual total to 63 fatalities. Data indicates that 61.9% of those who died were aged 65 or older, while 57.1% were men. A significant majority of the deceased—98.4%—had not received the influenza vaccine for the 2026 season, and 82.5% had not been vaccinated in 2025. Most victims also presented risk factors such as advanced age or metabolic, cardiovascular, and renal comorbidities.

While influenza deaths have occurred, respiratory syndrome cases and vector-borne diseases like dengue are showing a downward trend compared to 2025. For the current year, there have been 28,441 cumulative cases of influenza-like illness. Health authorities are urging the public to recognize symptoms such as fever, cough, and muscle aches, and to seek medical attention promptly. Medical professionals emphasize that vaccination remains a key preventive measure and that doses are still available.
