Panama National Assembly approves Luis Matador Tejada football honor

The National Assembly of Panama has unanimously approved Bill 560, establishing the National Order of Football Honor Luis ‘Matador’ Tejada. The award is designed to recognize athletes who have achieved excellence in football both on and off the field.

The initiative, proposed by Deputy Grace Hernández, aims to preserve the memory and sporting achievements of Luis Tejada Hansell. Tejada was a prominent member of the Panamanian national team and remains the team's all-time leading scorer with 43 goals. His career included playing in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and representing clubs in Colombia, Peru, Mexico, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.

During the legislative debate, lawmakers emphasized Tejada's lasting impact on Panamanian football and his role as an inspiration for future generations. Rita Hansell, the mother of the late footballer, expressed her gratitude for the official recognition of her son's career and sacrifices. Tejada passed away on January 28, 2024, following a cardiac arrest during a veteran players' match.
