Panama National Assembly enters final week of 2026 sessions
The National Assembly of Deputies in Panama has entered its final week of ordinary sessions for 2026, facing several high-priority legislative tasks. Key among these is Bill 644, which establishes the 2027 General State Budget. Following modifications by Economy and Finance Minister Felipe Chapman to prioritize health, infrastructure, security, and education, the $35.1 billion budget is set for its first debate in the legislative commission.
Another significant and controversial measure is Bill 699, which seeks to reform the Electoral Code to provide the framework for the 2029 general elections. The bill has faced opposition from members of the Vamos coalition, leading to increased friction among deputies. Additionally, Bill 746 has been approved, aiming to expand discounts on essential services such as medications, medical consultations, and electricity.
