Panama National Assembly forms parliamentary group with Taiwan

The Panamanian National Assembly has established a parliamentary friendship group with Taiwan, supported by 45 of its 71 members. The initiative aims to foster exchanges with Taiwan's Legislative Yuan and strengthen commercial ties.

China has responded with strong diplomatic pressure, with Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun warning that “crossing the line” regarding Taiwan could lead to “serious consequences.” Beijing maintains that the move violates the “One China” principle, which serves as the political foundation for Panama-China relations since Panama severed ties with Taiwan in 2017.

Analysts note that while the Panamanian Executive branch manages official diplomatic relations, the National Assembly maintains independent authority to develop legislative links. The formation of this group follows a virtual activity involving Taiwanese and American political representatives.
