Panama national football team showcases youth during Asian tour

The Panama national football team has concluded an Asian tour that highlighted both emerging talent and tactical areas for improvement. Under the direction of coach Thomas Christiansen, the squad aims to integrate a new generation of players following their qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

During the tour, which included matches against India, New Zealand, and Ecuador, all three games ended in 1-1 draws. Notably, all three goals scored by Panama were netted by debutants under the age of 23: Omar Valencia against India, Giovany Herbert against New Zealand, and Josué Vergara against Ecuador. In the match against Ecuador, Panama secured a 7-6 victory in a penalty shootout.

Despite the successful introduction of young players like Marcos de León, Daivis Murillo, Jair Modelo, Joseph Jones, and Mijahir Jiménez, the tour revealed challenges. Christiansen noted that while the team maintained good ball movement and possession, they struggled to convert that control into decisive scoring opportunities and real danger within the opponent's area.
