Panama officials charged with aggravated mistreatment of minors

Four former officials and staff members linked to the National Secretariat for Children, Adolescents, and Family (Senniaf) have been charged with aggravated mistreatment of minors at the Tocumen Integral Care Center (CAI). The investigation follows a February inspection by Deputy Alexandra Brenes, which uncovered irregular conditions and potential threats to the physical and emotional integrity of the children in the center’s care.

During a judicial hearing, Judge Marlenis Boutet imposed several precautionary measures on the defendants, including a prohibition on leaving the country, a ban on using social media, and orders to stay away from the victims and the Tocumen CAI. The accused must also report to authorities on the 15th and 30th of every month.

The Public Ministry has appealed the judge's decision to avoid pretrial detention. An appeal hearing is scheduled for October 6 at 8:30 a.m.
