Panama President reviews Bill 226 to expand retiree benefits

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino is reviewing Bill 226, a piece of legislation designed to expand benefits for retirees, pensioners, and senior citizens. Following its approval in a third debate by the National Assembly, the bill is currently awaiting presidential sanction or veto.

To address concerns regarding the law's implementation, the Executive branch met with representatives from retiree groups and the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP). The Chamber of Commerce has expressed concerns that the current version of the law, which includes unlimited tax credits, could lead to significant economic consequences, including potential unemployment, inflation, and a reduction in state tax revenue.

Business leaders are advocating for a more focused approach to identify and support the specific populations in need, seeking a balance that provides relief to seniors without destabilizing the country's fiscal deficit or investment climate. The President has 30 days to decide whether to sign the bill into law or veto it.
