Panama reactivates Plan Libertad for female inmates

Sixty-seven female inmates from the La Esmeralda Female Rehabilitation Center have resumed street sweeping duties in the San Miguelito district as part of the reactivated Plan Libertad. Working in coordination with the Urban and Domestic Cleaning Authority (AAUD), the participants were deployed to various sectors, including La Gran Estación, San Isidro, Villa Lucre, and parts of Via Ricardo J. Alfaro up to Linda Vista.

During a symbolic ceremony for the delivery of cleaning tools, Chanan Singh, Director General of the Penitentiary System, encouraged the women to view the program as a step toward their freedom. Ovil Moreno, Director of the AAUD, noted that four former participants of the program are currently being hired by the institution, suggesting that successful completion of the program could lead to formal employment within the AAUD.

Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn skills and prepare for reintegration into society. Local residents also welcomed the initiative, noting the positive impact of the cleaning efforts on their communities.
