Panama repatriates 17 citizens from Russia-Ukraine conflict zones

The Panamanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the successful repatriation of 17 Panamanian citizens from the conflict zones involving Russia and Ukraine. Of these individuals, 11 returned from Russian territory and six from Ukraine following coordinated diplomatic and consular efforts.

Tragically, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least two Panamanian nationals from Colón. Michael Alexander Navas, 31, was killed while serving with the Ukrainian military, and Abimael Becerra Ortiz, 19, died after joining Russian forces. Reports indicate that recruitment offers were frequently circulated on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp, promising monthly earnings of up to $9,000.

Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha has engaged in high-level discussions with Russian and Ukrainian representatives to facilitate the safe discharge and return of other nationals. Meanwhile, the Panamanian Public Ministry is conducting an investigation into how these citizens became involved in the war, which has already led to the detention of three individuals.
