Panama reports 64 cases of male breast cancer since 2021

The National Oncology Institute (ION) of Panama reported 64 cases of male breast cancer between 2021 and the first quarter of 2026. Annual figures show 8 cases in 2021, 5 in 2022, 14 in 2023, 15 in 2024, 15 in 2025, and 7 in the first three months of 2026.

Oncologist Roberto García noted that while these cases are less frequent than in women, the disease tends to present a more aggressive clinical evolution in men. Because there is no routine screening method for men equivalent to mammography for women, early detection relies heavily on self-examination and medical consultation.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) is urging men, particularly those over 50, to perform self-exams and monitor for symptoms such as lumps, skin changes, pain, inflammation, or nipple discharge. Men with a family history of breast cancer or known BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutations are advised to consult doctors regarding specific risk factors.
