Panama advances diplomatic and legal agendas at UN General Assembly

During the United Nations General Assembly, Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez held several high-level meetings to advance Panama’s international agenda. In a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Serguéi Lavrov, Martínez-Acha addressed the situation of Panamanian citizens involved in the conflict in Ukraine, requesting assistance for their return. He also raised concerns regarding the freedom of navigation for Panamanian merchant vessels in the Black Sea.

Separately, Panamanian judicial authorities ordered the preventive detention of three individuals—José Lyn Antonio Ramírez Rodríguez, María Irene García Domínguez, and Rolando Pinzón—on charges of aggravated human trafficking and organized crime. The suspects are accused of recruiting Panamanian citizens through false job offers on social media to send them to fight in Russia. Investigations revealed financial movements exceeding $800,000 sent from Colombia to facilitate these operations.

Martínez-Acha also engaged with representatives from the European Union to discuss investment opportunities, such as the Panama-Paso Canoas railway project, and with Mongolia to establish a political consultation mechanism. Additionally, the Foreign Minister reaffirmed Panama’s commitment to refugee protection as a humanitarian duty during UN sessions.
