Panamanian agricultural professionals challenge Minister Linares

The Association of Veterinarians of Panama and the College of Agronomists have formally objected to statements made by Roberto Linares, the Minister of Agricultural Development (MIDA). During the presentation of the 2027 MIDA budget, Linares questioned the age of certain professionals and criticized the high salaries and pensions received by state-employed veterinarians.

Linares also suggested that agronomists and veterinarians should spend more time working in the field rather than in offices. In response, the veterinary association issued a statement emphasizing that their role extends beyond animal care to include protecting public health, ensuring food security, and safeguarding the national economy. They noted that their sanitary surveillance is critical in preventing devastating diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever, and avian influenza.
