Panamanian Geisha coffee confirmed to maintain Ethiopian genetic purity

Two scientific studies presented by the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP) have confirmed that Panamanian Geisha coffee maintains 100% genetic purity relative to its ancestral plants from Ethiopia. One study, conducted in a French laboratory, compared Panamanian samples with ancestral material preserved at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) in Costa Rica, concluding the genetic lines are identical.

A second investigation focused on sensory characteristics, identifying distinct aromas of jasmine and white flowers that contribute to the variety's high market value. This unique profile, combined with the specific volcanic soil and climatic conditions of Boquete, Chiriquí, has driven international demand, with some coffee lots exceeding $30,000 per kilogram at auctions.

Industry leaders emphasize that preserving this genetic heritage is vital for Panama's economic future, as the purity of the variety remains susceptible to risks such as cross-pollination.
