Panama's World Cup debut in Toronto prompts nationwide closures and fan celebrations

Panama announced the suspension of public offices, municipal services, and school classes on 17 June 2026 to allow citizens to watch the national team’s first World Cup match against Ghana in Toronto. Large public screens were installed in stadiums and gyms across the country so fans could follow the game live.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz said his side is well‑organized and ready to counter Panama’s strengths, stressing the importance of winning every match in the group that also includes England and Croatia. He also noted that the Canadian court is hearing a case about midfielder Thomas Partey’s alleged criminal charges, but said the team will focus on the match.

The preparations came amid a 4.8 % GDP rise for Panama in early 2026 and other domestic news, including a new airport award and health advisories, but the World Cup debut dominated public attention.
