Panasonic recalls approximately 640,000 drum-type washing machines due to fire risk

Panasonic has announced a recall of approximately 640,000 drum-type electric washer-dryers manufactured between August 2021 and August 2024 due to a risk of smoke and fire. The recall affects 21 specific model numbers, including roughly 620,000 units in Japan and 18,000 units in Taiwan.

The issue stems from a defect in the automatic detergent and fabric softener dispensing unit. Detergent or softener may leak from the connection point, potentially coating internal lead wires. This can degrade insulation, causing a short circuit that may ignite nearby resin components.

As a precaution, Panasonic advises users of affected models to stop using the automatic dispensing function and to empty or remove the dispensing tanks, using manual dispensing instead. The company is providing free part replacements and inspections. Affected customers can receive new dispensing tanks by mail, after which technicians will visit homes to replace gaskets, install non-flammable sheets, and inspect wiring.
