Panathenaic Stadium begins historic marble cleaning after 120 years

The Hellenic Olympic Committee has launched a major restoration project at the Panathenaic Stadium, beginning an organized cleaning of its marble surfaces for the first time in approximately 120 years. The initiative aims to restore the natural appearance of the Pentelic marble and highlight the monument's architectural and historical significance.

The project is being carried out with the financial support of Vangelis Marinakis through his shipping company, Capital Maritime & Trading Corp. The cleaning process is conducted under the scientific supervision of architect Manolis Korres, an official advisor to the Hellenic Olympic Committee, in collaboration with certified conservators from the Ministry of Culture. Specialized, gentle methods are being used to remove surface impurities without damaging the authentic structure of the marble.

This intervention is part of a broader effort to upgrade the stadium's facilities, which includes installing a new athletic track and high-definition LED lighting. These improvements are intended to prepare the venue for high-level international competitions, such as the Diamond League, and to ensure it is ready for the upcoming Olympic Flame ceremony for the Youth Olympic Games in 2026.
