Greece faces political instability ahead of parliamentary elections, warns business leaders

German business daily Handelsblatt reports that Greek entrepreneurs are increasingly nervous about the coming months, viewing political uncertainty surrounding the next parliamentary elections as the biggest risk to the country’s recovery. The paper notes that Greece has continued its post‑crisis rebound with strong growth, low unemployment and improving public finances, but warns that a “loss of political continuity after seven years” could stall momentum. It highlights concerns about persistently high inflation, rising energy costs and the possibility of premature election calls in the autumn.

Former New Democracy official Thanasis Skordas echoes the warning, describing a “serious political vacuum” in Greece and saying citizens are looking for substantive policy solutions on inflation, security and the economy. He points out that the ruling New Democracy party, which won about 41 % of the vote in 2023, is now polling around 30 % ahead of the election, risking an inability to secure an absolute majority and possibly leading to a fragmented parliament. Both sources stress the need for credible policies to sustain the recent economic gains.

The combined warnings suggest that the upcoming election could have significant implications for Greece’s economic outlook and political stability.
