Panathinaikos signs Dutch defender Stephan de Vrij
Panathinaikos announced the acquisition of 34‑year‑old Dutch centre‑back Stephan de Vrij. The former Inter Milan captain signed a one‑year contract with an option for a second year, reportedly worth about €2.2 million per season plus performance bonuses. He passed a medical in the Netherlands and joined the squad’s pre‑season training in Apeldoorn.
De Vrij arrives after eight seasons with Inter, where he helped the club win three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies and three Supercoppa Italiana, making 296 appearances and scoring 33 goals. Internationally, he has earned 79 caps for the Netherlands, featuring at the 2014 World Cup, Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.
The club promoted the signing with a social‑media video showing de Vrij playing the piano, dubbing the transfer a “summer bomb” for the Greek side.
