Panavia Tornado marks 47 years since Air Defence Variant first flight

The Panavia Tornado Air Defence Variant (ADV) prototype, serial number A01 ZA254, completed its maiden flight on October 27, 1979, at Warton Aerodrome in Lancashire, England. The flight lasted 90 minutes and was used to evaluate control systems, stability, and maneuverability.

Developed as a joint venture between the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy, the Tornado ADV was designed specifically for long-range interception and air defense to protect British airspace during the Cold War. This differed from the original Tornado models, which focused primarily on ground attack missions.

The aircraft's history includes a previous first flight for the initial Tornado prototype (D-9591) in Manching on August 14, 1974. While the ADV variant did not achieve significant export success, it had a historical connection to Indonesia, having visited Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base around 1986 when it was offered to the Indonesian Air Force prior to their acquisition of the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
