Pancreatic cancer: Key symptoms and diagnostic challenges

Pancreatic cancer is noted for being difficult to diagnose and treat due to its aggressive nature and non-specific early symptoms. Medical experts, including Dr. Kamila Jakubiak, highlight that initial signs often mimic less serious issues such as indigestion, bloating, or general abdominal discomfort.

Key warning signs include unexplained and rapid weight loss—often accompanied by greyish skin and loss of muscle mass—as well as persistent fatigue and changes in appetite. As the disease progresses, mechanical jaundice may occur, characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes, itchy skin, and dark urine. Changes in stool color, such as pale, clay-like, or greyish stools, can indicate that a tumor is obstructing bile flow.

Other potential indicators include acute pancreatitis, new-onset diabetes (particularly in individuals over 50), abdominal or back pain, and gastrointestinal bleeding. While these symptoms can be caused by various conditions, their simultaneous appearance warrants medical consultation for proper diagnostic testing.
