Pancreatic cancer research and care models see new developments

Medical advancements and organizational shifts are targeting pancreatic cancer, a disease characterized by high mortality and difficult diagnosis. In Italy, there is a push to expand the ‘Pancreas Unit’ model, which has been active in the Lombardy region since 2022. This model aims to integrate various specialties—including gastroenterology, radiology, oncology, and surgery—to provide more coordinated and equitable care for the approximately 14,000 new diagnoses reported annually in the country.

In the United States, clinical research is showing potential breakthroughs. A Phase I trial at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has demonstrated that a personalized mRNA vaccine, developed by BioNTech and Genentech (a division of Roche), can activate the immune system to attack tumors. Additionally, research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research indicated that the drug daraxonrasib may offer a survival advantage, with patients living approximately six months longer than those receiving standard treatments.
