Pandilla Puneña: Efforts to preserve Peru's national cultural heritage

The Pandilla Puneña, a musical and choreographic expression recognized as Peru’s National Cultural Heritage, is the focus of efforts to improve its documentation and preservation. During the II National Congress in Juliaca, researchers and musicians discussed the evolution of the dance, its instrumentation, and its historical significance to the identity of Puno and San Román.

Despite its status as national heritage for 14 years, officials have noted significant gaps in safeguarding the tradition. Edmundo Cordero Maldonado, director of the Decentralized Culture Directorate of Puno, stated there is a pending debt regarding scientific research and systematized records of the dance's evolution. Concerns were raised regarding the incorporation of electronic elements and changes in traditional attire, as well as the need to ensure that its history and meaning are taught to new generations rather than just repeating movements.

Historical figures such as Manuel Montesinos Aguirre and Guillermina Rojas Calatayú have been highlighted for their roles in institutionalizing and promoting the dance. Experts continue to call for increased institutional support and academic study to protect the essence of the Pandilla Puneña.
