Pandit Kanthé Maharaj remembered for 1954 tabla world record

Pandit Kanthé Maharaj (1880‑1970) was a renowned Indian tabla virtuoso of the Banaras gharana. Trained by his father and guru Pandit Baldev Sahay, he became celebrated for his technical precision and creative "rela" compositions.

In 1954 he set a world record by playing the tabla continuously for two and a half hours, a feat that brought him national and international acclaim. He was honoured by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1961 for his contributions to Indian classical music. Maharaj performed for royal courts, major festivals and on global stages, influencing generations of musicians, including his nephew Kishan Maharaj, also a noted tabla artist. He died on 1 August 1970 at the age of 90.
