Pandit Samta Prasad: Iconic Indian Tabla Virtuoso Celebrated Worldwide

Pandit Samta Prasad (20 July 1921 – 31 May 1994) was a pre‑eminent tabla player of the Banaras gharana. Born in Kabir Choura, Varanasi, he began training under his father Hari Sundar and, after his father's death at age seven, became a disciple of Bikhur Maharaj, practicing for long hours.

He gave his first major public performance at the 1942 Allahabad Music Conference, subsequently touring major Indian cities such as Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Lucknow. Internationally he represented Indian cultural teams in France, Russia and Edinburgh, and recorded tabla for Bollywood songs including “Jhanak Jhanak Payal Bāje,” “Meri Surat Teri Aankhen,” “Basant Bahar,” “Asmanata” and “Sholay.”

The artist received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1979 and was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1991. He died of a heart attack while attending a workshop in Pune on 31 May 1994.
