Catalonia celebrates Castanyada and Halloween with rising panellet prices
Traditional Castanyada and Halloween celebrations are being observed across Catalonia, with local businesses reporting a blend of ancestral customs and modern festivities. In various municipalities such as Cerdanyola and Sant Cugat, residents have participated in activities ranging from traditional chestnut eating to Halloween-themed horror tunnels and costume parades.
The pastry sector is anticipating a strong sales season, though prices for traditional sweets like panellets are expected to rise by approximately 2% to 3% due to inflation and increased raw material costs. In Barcelona, the pastry guild predicts artisanal panellets will cost between 65 and 80 euros per kilogram. Specifically, pine nut panellets remain the most popular variety despite rising ingredient costs, which have seen pine nut prices double in some instances.
In Lleida, pastry professionals noted that while traditional flavors like almond and pine nut remain staples, there is growing interest in innovative varieties such as pistachio, chocolate, and Ferrero Rocher. Additionally, energy costs have risen significantly, impacting production expenses for local bakeries.
