Panevėžys hosts exhibition marking centenary of the diocese

An exhibition titled ‘From Archives to Altars: 100 Years of the Panevėžys Diocese’ has opened at the Panevėžys Art Gallery. Prepared by the Panevėžys Regional Museum, the display commemorates the centenary of the diocese, which became an independent administrative structure of the Lithuanian Catholic Church in 1926.

The exhibition showcases the diocese's journey from its founding to the present day, highlighting religious heritage, traditions, and cultural values. It features artifacts and copies from 17 churches within the diocese, as well as items from various archives, museums, and monasteries. Notable finds include portraits of the parents of Kazimieras Paltarokas, the first Bishop of Panevėžys.

The collection also addresses the historical challenges faced by the Church, including its role in resistance during the Soviet occupation and its subsequent revival. The event is supported by the Panevėžys City Municipality and the Panevėžys Diocese Curia. Accompanying lectures and guided tours are scheduled to run through December.
