Pangolin: Unique Scaled Mammal and Key Facts

The pangolin is the only mammal whose body is covered in keratin scales, a trait it shares with human nails and hair. It inhabits regions across Africa and Asia and is primarily nocturnal. Pangolins are specialized insectivores, feeding almost exclusively on ants and termites, which they capture with an exceptionally long, sticky tongue that can extend beyond the length of its body. When threatened, the animal rolls into a tight ball, using its hard scales as armor against predators. Researchers note the species' ecological importance and its severe conservation challenges, as pangolins rank among the most trafficked mammals worldwide.

These characteristics highlight both the pangolin's unique biological adaptations and the urgent need for protection measures to preserve its role in ecosystem balance.
